Mann's Record-Setting Day Leads BC Past SVU

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -
Freshman Blake Mann set school single-game records before the end of the first half, along with an NCAA mark, as the Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team defeated Southern Virginia University 21-10 at home on Wednesday.

Mann had eight goals by halftime, which already gave him the school marks for both goals and points in a game. He left the contest for good in the third quarter with 11 points on 10 goals and an assist.

The rookie also equaled an NCAA Division III record for fastest consecutive goals, scoring twice in four seconds late in the opening half. The only other player to accomplish that feat was Kean's Justin Lappen, back in 2011. Two other D3 teams, St. Joseph's-Maine and RPI, have had separate teammates record goals four seconds apart.

Mann had some help from classmate Tyler Nieto in accomplishing that feat. After Mann made it 10-5 with 1:16 remaining in the second quarter, Nieto won the ensuing faceoff clean and passed it right back to his red-hot teammate- who immediately ripped it high past the SVU goaltender.

Mann scored his eighth goal of the half five seconds before the break, as the Eagles went into the locker room with a 12-5 lead.

Mann would add two more points in the opening two minutes of the second half. He assisted Jeff Strickland for a 13-5 scoreline, and then broke in for an unassisted tally with 13:11 left in the third.

Mann scored his 10th goal on a man-advantage with an assist from Strickland. That tally with 3:47 left in the third quarter made it 18-7 Bridgewater and allowed the Eagles to go to their bench for the final period.

Mann's 10 goals in a game equals the highest single-game total in Division III from all of last season (this year's initial NCAA statistical rankings have not yet been published).

Southern Virginia had actually taken a 1-0 lead six seconds into the game, but Mann soon pulled things level.

Three straight goals from Mann in a 105-second span of the first quarter, with assists from Rob Simmons and Derrick Daniels on the final two, put Bridgewater ahead 6-3 after the opening period.

Matthew Arndt, Simmons, and Daniels scored in succession in the second quarter to make it 9-3 in favor of the hosts.

Junior Landon Elmore assisted Tylden Mosby in the fourth quarter and then finished off a feed from classmate Paul Miniaci. Michael Darby wrapped up the Eagles' scoring with 8:37 remaining.

Four goalies saw time for Bridgewater, with each recording at least a stop. Starter Michael Fairley made five stops and improved to 2-0 on the season, and was followed by Connor Lawson (five saves), Kevin Metzger (two saves) and Alexander Bredenburg (one save).

Strickland, Simmons and Daniels each recorded three assists, while Nieto won 15-of-20 faceoffs.

Anthony Good led SVU with four goals while Ryan Larsen had a hat trick and picked up three ground balls.

Current sophomore Chris Voorhees had previously set the young program's records for goals (six) and points (seven), in last year's victory over Southern Virginia.

The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the year and will look to continue their home winning streak on Saturday against Methodist. Methodist came from behind in the final five minutes to beat Southern Virginia 13-12 last weekend.
