Eagles Take Two From Messiah

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HARRISONBURG, Va.
- Bridgewater ran its baseball record to 3-0 by sweeping Monday's doubleheader from Messiah College, winning the opener 1-0 and the nightcap 8-5 at JMU's Veteran's Memorial Stadium.

In the first game, Bridgewater's Ryan Leake and Steven Woerner combined on a five-hit shutout to lead the Eagles to the victory.

The Eagles scored the game's only run in the bottom of the second inning. Kenner Berry led off with a double to the right-center gap and Justin Petock singled through the left side of the infield to score Berry for a 1-0 Eagles lead.

The Falcons had very few scoring opportunities against the Eagles in the opener. Zach Brubaker double into the right-field corner with two outs in the third, but Leake struck out the next batter to strand Brubaker at second.

In the fifth inning, Eagles centerfielder Darren Yoder misplayed John Griffitts' liner and the ball sailed over Yoder's head with Griffitts ending up on third base. Leake retired Brubaker on a grounder back to the mound to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Woerner pitched the final three innings and allowed just a two-out single in the top of the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

Leake improved to 2-0 with six strong innings. He allowed four hits and walked one batter while striking out five.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead in the second game with two runs in the first inning and one in the second.

Derrik Walling led off the bottom of the first with a single through the left side of the infield and Hunter Hensley followed with a bunt single past the mound toward second base. Leake walked to load the bases before Berry plated Walling with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 BC lead. Petock then chased Hensley home with a run-scoring single, making the score 2-0.

In the second inning with one out, Cavin Clyde was hit by a pitch. Clyde stole second and Walling walked to put two runners on. Hensley then singled down the left field line, scoring Clyde to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

The teams traded single runs in the fourth. Joseph Saufley led off the top of the inning with a double off Eagles' starter Petock. Saufley moved to third on a groundout to second and scored on Derek Drake's RBI-groundout to second, trimming Bridgewater's lead to 3-1.

The Eagles answered in their half of the fourth. Woerner reached on a throwing error to start the inning and advanced to third on a single by Clyde. Woerner scored on a sacrifice fly by Walling, putting the Eagles ahead 4-1.

Messiah made it a 4-2 game with a run in the fifth. With one out Griffitts singled and moved to second on Brubaker's sacrifice bunt. Jon Mullen singled through the left side of the Eagles' infield with Griffitts racing home on the base hit.

The Falcons tied the score in the seventh, scoring twice without the benefit of a base hit.

Eagles freshman Johnny LaVoie replaced Petock on the mound and was unable to find the strike zone in his first collegiate outing as he walked the bases full without recording an out.  Ian Mayes, another freshman, entered the game for the Eagles and a wild pitch allowed Griffitts to score from third, trimming the Eagles lead to 4-3.  With runners at second and third, Mayes recorded the first out of the inning on a grounder back to the mound. The Falcons tied the game when Brubaker scored on Colton Keister's perfectly executed squeeze bunt. Keister then stole second to once again put runners at second and third, but Mayes retired the next two batters to escape the inning with the scored tied at 4-4.

Bridgewater regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs on just one hit. Dustin Garst walked to lead off the frame and moved to second on Leake's sacrifice bunt. Berry reached on an error and Petock walked to load the sacks. Austin Batten drew a bases-loaded walk to force home one run and Yoder followed with a two-run single, giving the Eagles a 7-4 lead.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the eighth. With one out, Garst drew a walk. After Leake flew out for the second out, Garst moved into scoring position by stealing second base. He then scored on Berry's single to center, making the score 8-4.

The Falcons added an unearned run in the ninth, making the final score 8-5.

Petock pitched six solid innings and received a no-decision. He allowed two runs, both earned, on four hits.  Mayes picked up his first collegiate win with 2.2 innings of strong relief. He allowed one unearned run on one hit and struck out three batters.

Hensley, Petock and Batten each had two hits for the Eagles while Berry and Yoder each drove home a pair of runs.
