Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College rode a pair of strong starting pitching efforts Saturday afternoon to sweep an ODAC baseball doubleheader from Emory & Henry College. The Eagles won the opener 7-2 and then took the second game 15-3.
Steven Woerner worked eight stellar innings in the opener to pick up the win. The sidearmer allowed just two runs on four hits. He struck out five and walked two. Woerner outdueled E&H lefty Aaron Sparks. The Wasps ace allowed three runs, just one earned, on seven hits in six innings of work.
Bridgewater scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead.
In the second, Dustin Garst and Brendan Howell delivered back-to-back, one-out singles. Garst scored on a two-out throwing error by shortstop Jordan Woullard to put the first run on the scoreboard.
The Eagles added another unearned run in the third. Darren Yoder singled with one out and took second on a wild pitch. Yoder raced home on an error by third baseman Carson Bryant, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the fourth, Hunter Hensley kept the inning alive with a double down the left-field line. Derrik Walling followed with a run-scoring single up the middle for a 3-0 Eagles lead.
The Wasps finally got to Woerner with a run in the seventh. Bransen Christopher led off the inning with a single and Brandon Lineberry followed with a walk. A grounder by Bryant forced Lineberry out at second, leaving runners at the corners. Kevin Nelson was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Christopher scored the Wasps' first run when Chris Benton grounded out to short. Woerner avoided further damage when he retired Jacob Lykins on a ground ball to third for the third out of the inning.
Emory & Henry inched closer with another run in the top of the eighth. Josh Macek walked with one out and moved to second on Woullard's sacrifice bunt. Christopher lined a hard shot up the middle that bounced off Woerner for a single to put runners at first and third. Lineberry then lined a run-scoring single to right, scoring Macek to make the score 3-2. Woerner then struck out Bryant for the third out of the inning to strand two runners and preserve the one-run lead.
Bridgewater added some key insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to increase its lead to 7-2.
Clyde led off the inning with a single and took second on Hensley's sacrifice bunt. Walling followed with a triple to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead. Walling scored when Austin Batten's grounder was booted for an error, making the score 5-2. Yoder then doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Batten scored from third on a base hit by Kenner Berry and Yoder scored on the play when the ball was mishandled in the outfield as the Eagles lead ballooned to 7-2.
Ryan Leake finished up on the mound for the Eagles, allowing one hit in the ninth, for the final 7-2 margin of victory.
Five different players – Walling, Yoder, Berry, Clyde and Hensley, contributed two hits to Bridgewater's 12-hit attack.
In Game 2, Justin Petock allowed just two runs on five hits in seven innings of work on the mound, to pitch the Eagles to the victory.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Walling and Batten singled to start the inning and both moved up a base on Yoder's sacrifice bunt. Berry plated Walling with a groundout and Batten scored on a single by Garst for a 2-0 Eagles lead.
Bridgewater added another run in the second to make the score 3-0. Walling tripled with two outs and scored when Batten dropped a perfect bunt down the third-base line for a base-hit.
The Wasps made it a one-run game with two runs in the top of the fourth. With one out, Ben Barnett singled and scored on Christopher's double, putting E&H on the board. Another double, this one down the left-field line by Lineberry, scored Christopher to trim the Eagles' lead to 3-2.
Bridgewater answered with one run in the top of the fourth and three more in the fifth to lead 7-2.
In the fourth, Clyde singled and moved to second on Hensley's sacrifice bunt. Walling chased Clyde home with a single, making the score 4-2.
With two outs in the fifth, Leake doubled to center and scored on Howell's single to center for a 5-2 BC lead. After Clyde was hit by a pitch, Hensley ripped a two-run double into the left-field corner to put the Eagles on top 7-2.
Bridgewater broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the seventh. Walling tripled home a pair of runs and RBI-singles by Yoder and Josh Lasam made the score 11-2. Another run scored on an infielder error before Howell singled home two more runs, making the score 14-2. Tyler Dawson plated the final run of the inning with a single to right, giving the Eagles a 15-2 lead.
E&H scored its final run in the eighth on Lineberry's solo homer.
A total of 11 different players contributed to Bridgewater's 19-hit attack in the second game. Walling led the Eagles with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate and Yoder contributed three hits. Batten, Leake and Howell each added two base hits.
Bridgewater is now 12-4-1 overall and 3-4 in the ODAC while the Wasps fall to 2-14 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
The Eagles are back in action Tuesday afternoon when they host rival Eastern Mennonite in ODAC action. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
