BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College extended its winning streak to four straight with a 13-2 victory over Juniata College on a rainy Sunday morning at the Jopson Field Complex. Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed.
The Eagles jumped on Juniata starter Hunter Price for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Dylan Horne led off with a single up the middle and raced around to third on Brandon Poole's sacrifice bunt. Horne scored on Ryan Leake's double for a 1-0 Eagles lead. Kenner Berry continued to swing a hot bat as he chased Leake home with a double down the left field line to put the Eagles up 2-0. Cavin Clyde made it 3-0 as he scored Berry with a single up the middle.
Bridgewater added single runs in the fourth and fifth to lead 5-0.
After a brief rain delay in the top of the fourth inning, the Eagles tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth. Austin Batten led off with a single to left. Batten moved to second on a wild pitch and took third on Dylan Horne's groundout. Batten scored on Poole's two-out single through the right side, making the score 4-0.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the fifth when Berry and Clyde were both hit by a pitch and Batten walked. Berry scored to make it 5-0 when Parker Mead was hit by a pitch.
Juniata took advantage of a pair of Bridgewater throwing errors in the top of the seventh to score two unearned runs, but the Eagles answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to take an 11-2 lead.
With one out in the seventh, the Eagles loaded the bases. Clyde was hit by a pitch, Hunter Hensley bunted for a base hit and Batten walked. After Garrison Wright struck out for the second out of the inning, Horne slapped a grounder to the right side. Juniata first baseman Brady Cotler made a diving stop on the grounder but pitcher Wayne Hydak dropped the throw while covering first for an error. Clyde and Hensley both scored on the play, giving the Eagles an 8-2 lead. Poole walked to reload the bases and Leake followed with a bases-clearing double to center, increasing the Eagles' advantage to 11-2.
Bridgewater added its final two runs in the eighth. Clyde led off the inning with a walk and Hensley singled. Clyde scored on Wright's single to center, making the score 12-2. Horne then beat out an infield single and Hensley hustled home when the throw skipped past the first baseman, giving the Eagles a 13-2 lead.
Senior pitchers Justin Petock and Steven Woerner combined to limit Juniata to two runs, both unearned,on just five hits. Petock picked up the win with five shutout innings. He allowed just two hits while striking out seven and walking just one batter. Woerner notched the save with four strong innings. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits. Woerner struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Sunday's pitching performance lowered the team earned run average to 0.91 after four games.
Bridgewater finished the contest with 12 base hits. Horne, Leake, Berry and Hensley contributed two hits each to the total. Leake drove in four runs and Berry added two RBIs. Berry now has 11 RBIs in four games and Leake has nine RBIs.
Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday when the Eagles travel to Fredericksburg to meet the University of Mary Washington Eagles, Game time is 3:00 p.m.
