Eagles Sweep Doubleheader At Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. – The Bridgewater College Eagles picked up a key conference doubleheader sweep Saturday with two victories over Emory & Henry. The Eagles slugged their way to a 17-9 victory in the opener and then won the second game 8-4.

Bridgewater pounded out 21 hits in the first game to roll to the 17-9 win.

The Eagles jumped on top early with a pair of runs in the first. Cavin Clyde reached on a one-out single and, with two outs, Kenner Berry walked. Both runners scored on an E&H error, giving Bridgewater a 2-0 lead.

Ben Sexton put the Wasps on the board with a solo homer in the second off Eagles starter Justin Petock, but Bridgewater answered with two runs in the third to lead 4-1. With two outs in the inning, Berry singled and Chris King walked. Berry scored on a single by Brendan Howell and King scored when the outfielder misplayed Howell's hit for an error.

Bridgewater added a single run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Austin Batten, making the score 5-1.

A wild fifth inning ensued with Bridgewater scoring six times in the top of the inning and the Wasps answering with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth.

Berry led off the top of the fifth with a single and moved to third on a double by King. Berry scored on a wild pitch for a 6-1 Bridgewater lead. Howell then plated King with a run-scoring single to make it 7-1. After Garrison Wright was retired on a fly to center, Brandon Poole bunted for a hit to put runners at first and second. A single by Hensley scored Howell and left runners at the corners. Hensley swiped second and Batten chased both runners home with a double, giving the Eagles a 10-1 lead. Batten then scored on Clyde's single up the middle, pushing the margin to 11-1.

After E&H tallied four times in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-5, the Eagles added five runs in the top of the seventh. With two outs and nobody on, the Eagles strung together seven straight hits. Clyde started things with a single, stole second and moved to third on an error. Ryan Leake plated Clyde with a single and Leake scored on a double by Berry, making the score 13-5. King chased Berry home with a single and a single by Howell put runners at the corners. Wright and Poole then delivered back-to-back, run-scoring singles to push the Eagles' lead to 16-5.

Bridgewater tallied its final run on a RBI-single by Berry in the eighth, making the score 17-6.

Every Bridgewater starter had at least one base hit. Berry led the way with a 4-for-4 effort. He scored four runs and drove in two. Clyde was 4-for-6 while Howell and Poole each went 3-for-6 in the game. Hensley and King both collected a pair of hits while Batten led the team with three RBIs.

Petock picked up the win, allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings of work on the mound.

In the second game, freshman pitcher Tristan Daywalt turned in a solid start and Berry belted a pair of homers to lead the Eagles to the 8-4 victory.

Berry belted a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Eagles on top and three more runs in the the third made the score 5-0. Dylan Horne and Batten led off the third inning with singles and both runners move up on Clyde's sacrifice bunt. Horne scored on a sacrifice fly by Leake before Berry hit another two-run homer for a 5-0 Eagles lead.

Emory & Henry scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the third to pull to within one run. The key blow was a three-run homer by Brandon Lineberry.

The Eagles added one run in the top of the fifth. King led off with a double and moved to third on a fly ball. King then scored on Hensley's grounder to short, putting the Eagles ahead, 6-4.

Bridgewater added two insurance runs in the seventh inning. King led off with an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. King advanced to third on a groundout and scored on an infield error, making the score 7-4. Horne, who reached on the error, moved to second on a wild pitch and race home on Batten's single for an 8-4 Bridgewater lead.

Daywalt worked 6.2 innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits. He struck out four and walked four. Steve Woerner finished up with 2.1 innings of shutout relief.

Bridgewater now 15-9 overall and 6-3 in the ODAC, returns to action Monday afternoon when the Eagles host Virginia Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
