Eagles Take Two From Juniata

BRIDGEWATER, Va.
- Bridgewater College pushed its record above the .500 mark by winning both games of Sunday's doubleheader against Juniata College. The Eagles won the opener 8-2 and took the second game 10-5.

The Eagles took advantage of two infield errors in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead in Sunday's first game. 

Brandon Poole led off the game with a grounder to third. Poole ended up on second when the throw to first skipped past the Juniata first baseman and rolled out of play. Parker Mead then reached on an error at second to put runners at the corners. Kenner Berry walked to load the sacks and the Eagles scored their first run when Poole raced home on a passed ball.

Mead scored to make it 2-0 on Luke Paczewski's RBI-groundout. Brett Jones then delivered the only hit of the inning and his double to left-center scored Berry for a 3-0 Eagles' lead. Jones moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Jake Bailey's grounder, making the score 4-0.

Juniata nicked Eagles' starter Jordan Showalter for a run in the fifth with back-to-back, two-out doubles by Isaac Kline and Devin McLaughlin, making the score 4-1.

Bridgewater answered with two runs in the bottom of the innng to increase its lead. With two outs, Mead walked and Berry followed with his first homer of the season, giving Bridgewater a 6-1 advantage.

After the visitors added a run in the top of the seventh, the Eagles responded with two in the bottom half of the inning to close out the scoring. Berry and Paczewski each posted run-scoring singles to put the Eagles on top 8-2.

Showalter picked up the win with five solid innings on the mound. The lefty allowed one run on five hits while walking four and striking out three. Ryan Mason allowed one run on three hits in his two innings before Johnny LaVoie finished up with two scoreless frames.

Bridgewater scored six runs in the second inning to take an early lead in the second game and the Eagles went on to take the 10-5 victory.

Brett Jones led off the second inning with a double and Garrison Wright and JT Creed each walked to load the bases. Phillip Herber was then hit by a pitch, forcing in Jones to make it 1-0. Matthew LaPrade then belted a grand-slam homer to right-center to clear the bases and put the Eagles ahead 5-0. With one out, Mead reached on an error but was erased on Kenner Berry's grounder for the second out of the inning. Paczewski chased Berry around the bases with a triple to left-center, giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

Bridgewater starter Jacob Benfield faced the minimum through three innings before giving up two runs in the fourth on McLaughlin's two-run homer to pull Juniata to within 6-2.

The Eagles got those runs back in the bottom half of the fourth. Poole led off the inning with a single and Mead followed with a single to right. Poole went to third on Mead's hit and scored on an errant throw from the rightfielder to put the Eagles up 7-2. With one out, Paczewski walked to put runners at the corners and Jones followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Mead to make it 8-2.

After Juniata scored three times in the fifth to pull to within 8-5, the Eagles put the game away with single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Bailey plated a run in the sixth with a pinch-hit single and Mead drove home a run with a single in the seventh for the final 10-5 margin of victory.

Benfield picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on three hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked two. Spencer Griffin fanned four in two shutout innings while Kyle Jones and Ian Mayes each pitched one scoreless inning to finish the game.

The Eagles, now 4-3 on the season, return to action Thursday when they travel to Mary Washington. Bridgewater will stay on the road for its spring break trip to Florida. The Eagles' first game in the Sunshine State will be on Sunday, March 5 when they play a doubleheader against Ohio Northern.
