BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College jumped out to an early lead Sunday afternoon and starting pitcher Ian Mayes turned in six shutout innings on the mound as the Eagles defeated Stevenson, 11-2, in non-conference baseball action.
Mayes took a no-hitter into the fifth, but pinch-hitter Mike Weidmeyer broke up the bid with a clean single to left.
Mayes worked six innings and allowed no runs on one hit. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.
The Eagles took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Poole led off with a double and Garrison Wright walked. Poole scored on a single by Chris King and Wright moved to third on the base hit. Wright crossed the plate on Kenner Berry's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 Eagles' lead.
The Eagles made it 4-0 in the third when Poole led off with a bunt single and Wright followed with a homer to left, giving Bridgewater a 4-0 cushion.
Bridgewater padded the margin in the fourth with three more runs. Jacob Talley was safe at first and advanced to second on a throwing error to lead off the inning. Talley took third on a wild pitch and scored when Poole's grounder to first was misplayed for an error as the Eagles moved out to a 5-0 lead. Poole stole second and scored on a base hit by pinch-hitter Andrew Berry to make it 6-0. Andrew Berry, who took second when his base hit was misplayed in the outfield, raced home on a single by Kenner Berry to put the Eagles on top 7-0.
Stevenson got on the board in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by Billy Small, but the Eagles answered with four runs in the bottom half of the seventh to complete the scoring.
Kenner Berry led off the seventh with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. After Brett Jones walked, Kenner Berry scored on JT Creed's sacrifice fly, giving the Eagles an 8-2 lead. Cameron Stanley then singled and Talley walked to load the bases with one out. Parker Mead drew a bases-loaded walk to force home one run and Poole followed with a two-run single to right, making the final score 11-2
Poole finished with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. He scored three runs and drove in three runs to pace the Eagles' 12-hit attack. Kenner Berry was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Bridgewater, now 10-12 overall, returns to action Tuesday afternoon when the Eagles host Washington and Lee in ODAC action. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
