BRIDGEWATER – Bridgewater College improved to 3-1 on the season by winning both ends of Sunday's doubleheader with Juniata. The Eagles won the opener 9-4 and three pitchers combined on a shutout to win the second game 3-0.

Bridgewater jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the opener. Parker Mead lined a one-out double to right field and then scored on Luke Paczewski's double to the gap in left-center for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead.

The Eagles tacked on there more runs in the second inning. Jacob Talley led off the inning with a single, extending his hitting streak to 24 games, and Jake Bailey was hit by a pitch. Garrison Wright moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error by the pitcher allowed Wright to reach base, loading the sacks with no outs. Michael Morgan plated both Talley and Bailey with a single to center and Wright scored on Parker Mead's fielder's choice groundball to put the Eagles on top 4-0.

Juniata finally got to Eagles' starter Tristan Daywalt in the top of the fourth. With one out, Devyn Carper and Matt Innella stroked consecutive singles. Both runners advanced on a groundball and both scored on Austin Suders' two-out single as Juniata cut the deficit in half to trail 4-2.

The visitors had Daywalt in trouble again in the fifth when singles Cameron Livingston and Josh Keszczyk put runners on the corners with no outs. Daywalt struck out the next three hitters to strand the runners and preserve the 4-2 lead.

After Daywalt wiggled out of trouble in the top of the fifth, Bridgewater added one run in the bottom of the inning when Brett Jones doubled with one out and scored on a single up the middle by Jake Bailey, putting the Eagles ahead 5-2.

Juniata pulled closer with a pair of runs in the sixth off reliever Samuel Imeson. Chris Schreder led off the inning with a double and Zach Tobash walked. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Suders walked to load the bases with no one out. Imeson struck out the next two batters, but Keszczyk singled to left, chasing home two runs to pull the visitors to within 5-4.

Bridgewater pulled away with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh. Brett Jones walked to lead off the inning, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error. Talley plated the run with a single for a 6-4 lead. Jake Bailey walked to put two runners on and both moved up on a wild pitch. Talley scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Andrew Berry to put the Eagles up 7-4. Kevin Navedo then entered as a pinch-hitter and the freshman belted a two-run homer over the left-field fence, giving Bridgewater a 9-4 lead.

Batten, Talley and Bailey each contributed two hits to the Eagles' 11-hit attack.

Daywalt worked five innings to get the victory and improve to 2-0 on the season. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one. Kyle Jones worked the final three frames to get credit for the save. Jones fanned two, walked one and did not allow a hit.

The first five innings of the second game was a pitcher's duel between Bridgewater starter Andrew Berry and Juniata starter Drew Harshbarger. Both allowed just one hit in five innings of work, but the Eagles nicked Harshbarger for a run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.

Bridgewater loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first. Batten singled to lead off the inning, Mead walked and King was hit by a pitch. Harshbarger minimized the damage when he induced Paczewski to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Batten scored on the double-play grounder for a 1-0 lBridgewater ead. Harshbarger then struck out Brett Jones looking to get off the jam, allowing just the one run.

Berry dominated the Juniata lineup, allowing only a leadoff single to Isaac Maclay in the second inning.

After Jordan Showalter retired the side in order in the top of the sixth, Bridgewater added two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.  With two outs, Mead eached on an infield error and stole second. Mead raced home on King's double to put the Eagles on top 2-0. Paczewski followed with a double to deep left-center field to score King for a 3-0 Bridgewater lead.

Ryan Skadra then worked a scoreless top of the seventh to record his first collegiate save as the Eagles took Game 2, 3-0, to complete the sweep.

Bridgewater' Talley was held hitless in the second game, ending his 24-game hitting streak.

Bridgewater returns to action Tuesday afternoon when the Eagles host Messiah. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
