Men's Lacrosse Loses to Defending Champs

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team fell to defending ODAC champion Hampden-Sydney, 12-3 on Saturday at Jopson Field.

Kevin Metzger made 19 saves in the cage and recorded a team-high three ground balls, a number that was matched by freshman defenseman Brandon Schick.

Metzger made two saves on the game's opening possession, but the Tigers forced a turnover on the clear and Ian Levin scored in transition. Sydney struck again 41 seconds later, and took a 4-0 lead in the first quarter.

Taylor Phipps had BC's best chance of the opening period, forcing a low save by Mitch Renfrow. Late in the first, Metzger picked a tough ground ball and then made a good save on John Burke to deny HSC on consecutive possessions.

Blake Mann finally got the Eagles on the board with 7:12 left on an impressive reverse shot. Metzger made a point-blank save on Hampden-Sydney's Jack Hayden, as the Tigers scored just once in the second period and led 5-1 at halftime.

Mason Gauntt lost the opening faceoff of the second half but stuck with the play to force a turnover on a big check. Eric Husselbaugh picked up the ground ball and scored to make it 5-2 Tigers. HSC responded with two man-up goals as part of a three-point run to open up an 8-2 lead.

Mann saved an errant pass along the sideline on a clear, and then assisted Sean MacLeish for a third quarter goal that made it 8-3 Hampden-Sydney.

Hampden-Sydney got four goals from Chandler Shaheen, a hat trick from Levin, and five points (two goals, three assists) from Burke. Wilson Booth had a game-high six ground balls.

Bridgewater was facing a former assistant coach for the second time this year, as Hampden-Sydney's staff includes assistant Billy Cameron.

Bridgewater falls to 5-3, 0-2 ODAC and will play their final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday at SVU. Hampden-Sydney is 6-2, 2-0 ODAC.
