BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College ran its record to 4-1 on the season by taking both ends of a doubleheader from Messiah on Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 5-3 and taking the second game 7-2.
In the first game, Luke Paczewski gave the Eagles the lead with a run-scoring double in the third and starter Tucker Garrison made the 1-0 lead stand until the sixth when Messiah pushed across the tying run.
The Eagles then responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the upper hand. With one out Jacob Grabeel singled and Jarret Biesecker walked. Jacob Talley plated Grabeel with a double, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. The Falcons issued an intentional walk to Kevin Navedo to load the sacks befoe Paczewski drove in a run with a groundout to make it 3-1. Matthew LaPrade gave the Eagles some breathing room with a two-run single, increasing the lead to 5-1.
The Falcons nicked Brett Tharp for two runs in the seventh before the right-hander closed the door to preserve th 5-3 win.
Garrison pitched 5.1 innings and allowed just one run while scattering seven hits. Tharp picked up the win in relief.
In the second game, Hunter Mohr went the distance, pitching the Eagles to the 7-2 victory. Mohr allowed two runs on four hits while striking out three batters and walking two.
Bridgewater took control with six runs in the bottom of the second inning.Tanner Montgomery's RBI-groundout put the Eagles on the board and Navedo drove in two runs with a single for a 3-0 Bridgewater lead. A bases-loaded walk to JT Creed plated the fourth run and Grabeel drove in a run with a single to push the margin to 5-0. LaPrade scored on a wild pitch, making the score 6-0.
Mohr gave up both runs to the Falcons in the fifth. Bridgewater added its final run in the bottom of the sixth on Montgomery's sacrifice fly.
Bridgewater is back in action Sunday when the Eagles host DeSales for a doubleheader. The first game will begin at 11:00 a.m.
