Eagles Sweep Two From Greyhounds

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Bridgewater baseball team ran its record to 8-1 by sweeping both ends of a doubleheader on Monday against Moravian at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. The Eagles slipped past the Greyhounds 7-6 in the opener and then used a 13-run outburst in the fourth inning to snap a 5-5 tie and take an 18-5 victory in the second game.

Bridgewater jumped out to a quick lead in the opener with three runs in the first. Jarret Biesecker led off with a single and Jacob Talley was hit by a pitch. With one out, Luke Paczewski singled to load the bases. Matthew LaPrade then drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Eagles on the board. With the sacks still full, JT Creed plated two runs with a single to left field for a 3-0 Bridgewater lead.

The Greyhounds responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first. With one out, Carmine Pulummo and Ian Csencsits stroked back-to-back singles. An errant pickout throw to second moved the baserunners to second and third. Brett Moyer chased home a run with a groundout and David Bertolotti followed with a run-scoring single to trim the Eagles' lead to 3-2.

The Eagles increased the margin in the third when LaPrade drew a one-out walk and Creed followed with a homer, making the score 5-2.

The Greyhounds once again closed the margin to a single run with two in the bottom of the fifth. Palummo belted a solo homer and Thomas Phillipps added a run-scoring single through the left side of the infield, closing the gap to 5-4.

Bridgewater answered with two keys runs in the top of the sixth. With one out, Jeffrey Snider doubled and moved to third on a passed ball. Snider scored on a base hit by Biesecker to make it 6-4. Biesecker then stole second and continued on to third as the ball got past the catcher and rolled all the way to the backstop. Biesecker scored on Talley's sacrifice fly, giving the Eagles a 7-4 lead.

Moravian continued to battle and scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one-run game for the third time. Moyer singled home a pair of runs, cutting the Eagles advantage to 7-6.

Robbie Stoss entered to pitch the seventh for the Eagles and gave up a leadoff single to Chris Pow. Pow then moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Stoss struck out Nick Montone for the second out and retired Michael Miceli on a grounder to Talley at shortstop to preserve the 7-6 victory.

Creed was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and Biesecker finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Hunter Mohr picked up the win, allowing two runs, both unearned, on just four hits in three innings of work on the mound.

The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the nightcap with one run in the first and four more in the bottom of the second. Biesecker led off the first with a single and moved to third on a single by Talley. Kevin Navedo plated Biesecker with a sacrifice fly for the game's first run.

Brett Tharp led off the second with a bunt single, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Phillip Herber followed with a run-scoring single to right, making the score 2-0. With one out, Biesecker bunted for a hit and Talley followed with a three-run homer to put the Eagles up 5-0.

The Greyhounds rallied with four runs in the third and one more in the top of the fourth to tie the score at 5-5. Miceli, Pow and Phillipps each delivered run-scoring hits in the third and Pow added another RBI-single in the fourth to tie the score.

The Eagles then put the game away with their 13-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, LaPrade hit a towering grand-slam homer to right, snapping the 5-5 tie and giving the Eagles a 9-5 lead. Snider plated a run with a single and, with the bases loaded again, Talley added a two-run single, making the score 12-5. A run-scoring single by Paczewski and a bases-loaded walk to LaPrade increased the lead to 14-5. Tharp doubled in two more runs and the final two runs of the inning scored on an infield error.

Biesecker was 3-for-4 in Game 2 with three runs scored and Talley went 3-for-5 with five RBIs. LaPrade finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs and Tharp was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases in his first start of the season as a position player.

Tucker Garrison pitched the first four innings and was credited with the win, allowing five runs on six hits, Freshman RHP Evan Gagne pitched the final three innings and did not allow a hit.

The Eagles are back in action Tuesday morning against Eastern Nazarene.
