Last Time Out

It's been two weeks since the last time the Eagles played football, with their last contest being against the Washington & Lee Generals. W&L, who currently ranks first in the ODAC with a 4-0 conference record, came into the game after having an extra week of rest with their bye week, while Bridgewater had just grabbed their first win in five games against the Apprentice School. In the end, the rested team, behind a strong defensive performance, walked away with the win, 17-0.

At quarterback, Bridgewater alternated between Matt Lawton and Malcolm Anderson. Lawton finished the day 9-of-20 for 68 yards while Anderson threw four passes, completing two for 13 yards.

On the ground, Bridgewater leaned on junior Ronald Robinson Jr. who finished the day with 35 yards on nine carries. Viante Tucker led the way through the air, catching five passes for 43 yards.

On defense, no one shined brighter than the 2020 All-American Brett Tharp, who racked up 23 tackles and a forced fumble. The team recorded six TFL's with Shawn Harris leading in the area with two. Aaron Moore and Justin Holley both brought in one interception with Moore adding two pass breakups.

Previous Meeting

Bridgewater and Hampden-Sydney last met in 2019, where the Eagles rolled in a 51-7 win.

It's a surprise to think that Bridgewater ever trailed in this game, but after going up 6-0 early, the Tigers responded with a touchdown of their own to take the 7-6 lead. That would end Hampden-Sydney's day on offense as Bridgewater proceeded to drop 45 unanswered in the contest.

This game was one which saw quarterback Jay Scroggins lead the Eagles up and down the field, ending in a 232-yard, three touchdown day for the senior. Bridgewater also had six rushers and seven pass catchers record 10-or-more yards spurring the Eagles' massive offensive day.

Defensively, Bridgewater only gave up seven points and held Hampden-Sydney to only 178 total yards. Chase Rosenthal, a corner who is still on the roster in 2021, led the team in tackles with seven. He also grabbed an interception. Following Rosenthal were Deion Richardson and Brett Tharp, two more Eagles on the 2021 roster, who had six and five tackles, respectively.

Head Coaches

Bridgewater head coach Scott Lemn is currently 3-5 in his first season at the helm and is still searching for his first conference victory.

Hampden-Sydney's Marty Favret is in his 22nd season as the Tiger's head coach. In that span, Favret has amassed a 139-80 record with an 89-47 ODAC record. He is searching for his 16th winning season this year.

Bridgewater Offense

Matt Lawton ranks third in the ODAC with 1,384 passing yards and is tied for third with nine passing touchdowns. Chad Jones sits in the ODAC's top five in receiving yards (480) and touchdowns (5).

Running back Demetreus Jalepes has the seventh most rushing yards in the ODAC with 359.

Bridgewater Defense

Coming off a career day, Brett Tharp ranks fourth in the ODAC in tackles with 86. Nazeer Jordan is also high on the list, sitting at sixth with 66 tackles.

Even after the bye week, Jayden Johnson still ranks first in the ODAC with five sacks. He is also tied for first with two forced fumbles.

Val West is tied second in the ODAC for pass breakups with six followed by Chase Rosenthal who is tied for fourth with five. Both defensive backs have one interception on the season as well.

Bridgewater Special Teams

Jackson Hendren, along with RMC's Chris Vidal and Ferrum's Seth Deaton, has kicked 12 field goals on the year making nine of them. His 75% field goal percentage ties him with Vidal for the third highest field goal percentage in the ODAC. Hendren has also made all 17 of his PAT's.

Of the four ODAC punters with stats recorded, Garrett Graves leads the ODAC in yards per punt with 40.5 and punts inside the 20 with 22. He also has the ODAC's second longest punt at 62 yards.

HSC Offense

Quarterback Tanner Bernard sits atop the ODAC with 2,092 passing yards and second in passing touchdowns with 13. On the ground, Kaleb Smith ranks fourth in the ODAC in rushing yards with 505 and is tied for third in rushing touchdowns with nine. The Tigers have two receivers who rank in the ODAC's top four for receiving yards, those being Braeden Bowling (667) and Dillon Costello (481).

HSC Defense

Hampden-Sydney has two players in the top three in the ODAC in tackles, those being Will Pickren (91) and Brendan Weinberg (90). Weinberg also leads the ODAC in TFL's with 13.5, and also has three sacks, two interceptions and a pass breakup.

Tobias Lafayette leads the ODAC in interceptions with five. He also has the most interception return yards in the ODAC with 115.

HSC Special Teams

The Tigers have used two kickers this season with Jack Breedlove and Palmer Smith. Breedlove started the year has the team's top kicker but has been replaced by Smith as the season has gone on. Both kickers have attempted five field goals on the year, with Breedlove making three compared to Smith's four. Neither kicker has missed a PAT on the year.

Punting for Hampden-Sydney is George Langhammer, the only punter with a longer recorded punt than Graves this season at 67 yards. However, quarterback Tanner Bernard has also attempted six punts on the season, something to keep an eye on during the game.

Next Time Out

Bridgewater plays their final game of the season against Guilford on November 13th.
