Eagles Sweep E&H Behind Stellar Pitching Efforts

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College allowed just one unearned run Saturday afternoon as the Eagles opened conference play by sweeping a doubleheader from Emory & Henry. The Eagles shut out the Wasps in the opener 11-0 and then won the second game, 4-1.

In the first game, Hunter Mohr and Nick Griffin combined on a three-hit shutout. Mohr allowed just one base hit while striking out 10 and walking one batter in seven innings on the mound. The only hit off Mohr was a leadoff single in the top of the fourth by Caleb Haynes. Griffin completed the shutout with two innings of work.

The Eagles jumped on the Wasps early with two runs in the first inning and three more in the second. Jarret Biesecker reached on an error to lead off the first inning and moved to third in a single by Timothy Hopson. Biesecker was out at the plate when he tried to score on a wild pitch, but Jeffrey Snider followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Snider stole second and Hunter Clever chased both runners home with a single, making the score 2-0.

Waring Garber got things started in the second inning with a single up the middle. Biesecker then put down a sacrifice bunt and when the throw to first was off target, the Eagles had runners at first and third with no outs. Hopson followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Garber to make the score 3-0. Snider was safe on a throwing error, putting runners at first and second. Clever then singled to center, scoring Biesecker for a 4-0 lead. Both Snider and Clever advanced an extra base when the outfielder misplayed Clever's base hit. With two outs, Jonathan Sexton walked to load the bases and Snider scored on a wild pitch to put the Eagles up 5-0.

Mason Mitchell drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth increased the lead to 8-0. Biesecker led off the sixth inning with a single, stole second and scored on Hopson's opposite-field double. Hopson later scored on a single by Clever.

The Eagles added their final three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, a single by Biesecker and walks to Hopson and Snider loaded the bases. Clever plated one run with a single and Jacob Grabeel chased home two more runs with his single to right, giving the Eagles an 11-0 lead.

Clever had a big game at the plate in the opener, going 4-for-5 with five RBIs to lead the Eagles' 14-hit attack. Biesecker was 3-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs. Hopson finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs while Grabeel finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

The strong pitching continued for the Eagles in Game 2 as Garber got the start and worked six solid innings, allowing just one unearned run on six hits.

The Eagles scored all the runs they would need with a three-spot in the bottom of the third. Mitchell led off with a single and Biesecker followed with a bunt single. With one out, Mitchell scored on an infield error to put the Eagles on the board. Clever then singled to load the sacks and Grabeel walked to force in a run, making the score 2-0. Sexton plated the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

After the Wasps scored their run in the fifth, the Eagles answered with a single tally in the bottom of the sixth. Kyle Carlson reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second on Mitchell's sacrifice bunt. Carlson scored on a Hopson double for a 4-1 Eagles lead.

Clever entered the game to pitch in seventh and found himself in trouble with runners at second and third and just one out. The sophomore righthander retired the next two batters to work out of the jam and keep the Eagles on top 4-1.

The Wasps threatened again in the eighth inning as they once again put runners at second and third. With two outs, lefty Tucker Hrasky entered the game on the mound and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. Hrasky stranded the runners on the base paths as he retired Jacob Zoller on a fly ball to shallow right field to end the inning.

Hrasky recorded the save when he retired the side in order in the top of the ninth with a pair of strikeouts and an infield popup.

The Eagles finished Game 2 with 10 hits. Hopson led the way with a 3-for-5 effort while Biesecker and Mitchell each had two base hits.

Bridgewater, now 2-1 overall, is back in action Wednesday when they host Mary Baldwin in a non-conference game.
