WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's golf team put up great scoring across the board to post a fifth-place spot among 11 teams on the Jamestown Course Sunday in the final round at the Ruckus.
Better conditions on the course with less wind along with better pace of play were at play in the second round of action. The Eagles tied the second-lowest team score in program history with a score of 288 for the third time in program history. In the overall team score standings, Bridgewater took fifth, moving up one spot and coming away with the second best number in the tournament for a single round behind 287 in the first round from Drew who took the crown.
Max Bondurant played to a high caliber in competition with 14 pars, two birdies, an eagle and a single bogey to tie his best at 69 (-3). Bondurant responded well after having to return to the course at 8:30 a.m. to finish two holes from the first round, resulting in a score of 75-69 placing fourth of 62 golfers.
With critical ball-striking and wedge play,
Brandon Washburn posted his first under-par round of his career with a 71. Washburn sat +1 through two, then played -2 the rest of the way without any bogies to tie for 10th place individually.
After experiencing a subdued round,
Walker Gillespie worked three bogies and three birdies for even par. Gillespie scrambled and putted well to keep him in competitive range for a high-level collegiate golf outing.
Following that,
Christian Carroll played the back nine even to post 76, despite struggling with ball-striking and still providing the Eagles with a strong team number.
Will Layton also found issues uncharacteristically in putting on the course with four three-putts carding a 79.Â
"Conditions were set better today and glad to see how our team responded," said assistant coach Mike Clark. "A team par round of golf is always something special. We kept big numbers off scorecards [only one double] and seeing red numbers by [Bridgewater] players is a great feeling. The key is to build on today's effort."
The Eagles are back in action at Camp Lejeune April 4.
