Eagles Move Up in Jekyll Finale

ST. SIMON'S ISLAND, Ga. - The Bridgewater College women's golf team rounded out the final day at the Jekyll Island Collegiate among an elite field on Sunday, holding down 18th place of 24 teams on the course.

With great weather at King & Prince, after a promising first round and a rough second, the Eagles sought a solid finish; although not scoring as well as hoped with a team score of 341. However, the score moved the Eagles up a spot to finish 18th, finishing three spots above BC's seed and beating two top-50 ranked teams.

Facing a tougher back nine in today's round as the second round, Bridgewater experienced a setback in blow-up holes in the last two rounds.

Sophia Martone started with rough holes beginning with a +6 through five holes including three double-bogies caused by errant tee shots. Martone weathered the rough start and played the back nine at +2 despite a double on the closing hole from a tee ball that found the water and three-putt. In the final scores, Martone stood tied for 40th among 120 golfers, shooting an 82.

Coming off her first collegiate medal, Hannah Rizzo hit a rough patch with a setback in performance from her last outing. With fatigue setting in, Rizzo went through the fourth round of the week featuring four double bogies. Rizzo turned some of her performance around to work a 7-hole stretch in the middle at just +1 with two birdies while finishing with an 84 in the final round.

Despite double, triple, and quintuple bogies; Evelyn Hunter rounded out a strong collegiate performance in all three rounds at 81-93-87 along with leading in team pars. Freshman Brooke Tyler also found good stretches among a highly competitive field, but had seven holes above bogey to card a 95.

Capping off a rough week with a better performance, Bridgewater's fifth golfer, Emily Price, managed the tough starting holes with no worse than bogey to shoot an 88.

The last two rounds were not very satisfying, especially after a very good first round, but there were still some good takeaways," said Bridgewater golf head coach John Rogers. "We did better than our ranking in the field, and we finished ahead of a conference rival who is top-35 nationally. We also played well enough to make the cut to return to this great event next year. It was good to get a four-day event under our belt because we have two more coming up in the next five weeks."

Emory won with a three-day total of +18.

The Eagles return to action in Camp Lejeune Collegiate on April 4.
