LEXINGTON, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's golf team completed the first round of the VSGA Intercollegiate tournament today at Lexington Golf & Country Club. After a solid team score of 322 the Eagles sit in fourth place, while senior
Sophia Martone, playing the final regular-season event of her career, is doing something that has become typical -- stalking the lead.
Martone, who is cumulatively under par for her last four rounds, birdied her first and final holes of the day, and played the holes in between at just +3. Her final tally of 73 (+) has her one stroke off the lead, alone in second among 44 players. Impressively, Martone has medaled in three of her eight events this season, and has six total victories in her college career.
"Sophia spent about half of her college career fighting an injury," said head coach
John Rogers. "And it is still a career to be proud of, but it has been fun to watch what she can do when she's healthy. She has just over a week left in her career, so hopefully she can enjoy every minute of it."
Hannah Rizzo has had a break-out season of her own. Picking up her first medal this spring, the sophomore also seems to be getting in a habit of hanging around the top of leaderboards. On Monday, Rizzo had a quiet round, with eleven pars and two birdies. She posted 75, good for a share of 4th place.
In her own way, senior
Evelyn Hunter has also had a break-out year. Spending much of her career as the sixth player in the lineup, she has taken full advantage of moving into the starting lineup during her final semester. With a career scoring average of 93 coming into this season, she has averaged 87 this spring, and 85 in the last two tournaments. "I'm grateful to have earned a spot in the lineup where I can finally show what I'm capable of. I've been putting in the work, and it's rewarding to have contributed scores that can help the team," said Hunter. Today she posted 86 for the Eagles.
Freshman
Brooke Tyler provided the fourth score for Bridgewater, shooting an 88. She did a good job of keeping most holes to bogey or par, but had two larger numbers that inflated her score.
Junior
Emily Price similarly had most of the round under control, but her short-game let up on the 6th hole and she posted a quintuple bogey. She came in with a 93.
The Eagles are in 4th among seven teams, and play resumes at 9 AM on Tuesday.
